This length of gota, ribbon woven of silk and strips of metal, was collected for the Paris Exhibition of 1855. Gota is often used to embellish dress and textiles in South Asia, and can be sewn flat along borders, twisted into designs and couched down, or cut into smaller pieces for applique-work. Gota is made in a wide range of widths and styles, from plain silver or gold, patterned with coloured silks, or embossed with stamping techniques. This example has been embossed with designs that give it a 3D effect.

Roll of silver-gilt tinsel ribbon, woven of strips of silver gilt warps and orange silk wefts. Embossed with diagonal geometric and floral motifs.

Transferred from the India Museum is 1879. Purchased for the Paris International Exhibition of 1855. Slip Book entry 619: 'Three pieces Gold Ribbon / Delhi / 1855 / Purchased / Two of the pieces are half silver and half gold in width for trimming costume.' 1880 Register entry: 'RIBBON.
