c.1855 (made)
Place of origin |
This length of gota, ribbon woven of silk and strips of metal, was collected for the Paris Exhibition of 1855. Gota is often used to embellish dress and textiles in South Asia, and can be sewn flat along borders, twisted into designs and couched down, or cut into smaller pieces for applique-work. Gota is made in a wide range of widths and styles, from plain silver or gold, patterned with coloured silks, or embossed with stamping techniques. This example has been embossed with designs that give it a 3D effect.
