Place of origin |
Costume design by Hugh Stevenson for a woman in the unrealised ballet The Deserted House. The theatre designer Hugh Stevenson (1910 – 1956) who worked extensively with choreographers including Antony Tudor, Andrée Howard and Ninette de Valois was created the plots of many of the ballets he designed. It is likely that The Deserted House (a design for which was reproduced as an illustration in the Studio April 1944 p.126 as a ‘ballet in course of preparation’ ) was such a project that was unrealised. It might possibly have been inspired by E T A Hoffmann‘s story of the same title.
Hugh Stevenson was one of the leading designers for dance during the first quarter of a century of the development of C20th British Ballet. Although not revolutionary in style or concept, Stevenson's work, in its sympathy with both the subject and mood provides good examples of dance design at that time.
