From the mid-nineteenth century into the early twentieth, carpet weaving was a common form of penal labour all over India. Carpets produced in prisons ranged in quality from poor to excellent, certain jails developing reputations for exemplary productions. According to the inscription woven along its top border, this carpet was a production of the Nabha Central Jail in Punjab.
