Costume doll representing a female dancer from Varanasi. Unidentified armature and stuffing covered in cotton cloth. Wide trousers (farshi paijama) of dark blue and white ikat in a chevron design, trimmed with silver ribbon (gota) and edged at hem with red satin decorated with couched metal strip and sequins, bordered with silver ribbon (gota). Long sleeved open robe (peshwaz) of magenta silk with brocaded circles in metal-wrapped thread. Bordered with green satin strip edged with silver ribbon (gota) and decorated with a floral meander in couched metal-wrapped thread and metal strip with sequins and red glass beads. Scarf wrapped around waist and draped over shoulders of magenta and green checked silk with brocaded metal-wrapped thread medallions, with end borders of red cotton with floral meander in metal-wrapped thread, black and red floss silk, and domed sequins, and side borders of yellow woven silk and metal strip with brocaded floral and grid design. Black cotton fabric hair edged with metal strip and with long braid wrapped with metal ribbon (gota). Embroidered eyes, eyebrows and mouth. Hanging hair ornaments on either side of head with two strands of seed pearls and pendants with seed pearls, green glass beads and flat green and clear glass 'gems' in the centre. Earrings of gold-coloured metal fish, and small ear ornaments of coiled metal and seed pearls. Necklace of seed pearls with large glass 'gem' at centre and hanging green glass bead. Bracelets and hand ornaments of metal strip on both hands, with remnants of adhesive indicating missing jewellery. Fingers and toes tipped with red cotton.
