Costume doll representig a 'badmash' (dishonest man) from Varanasi. Unidentified armature and stuffing covered in cotton cloth. Dressed in a short, tightly wrapped dhoti of white cotton with green and silver-gilt strip borders. Sash wrapped around waist and over left shoulder. Field of white jamdani-woven cotton with pattern of small butis; Paithani-style ends of magenta silk and metal-wrapped thread with tapestry-woven floral designs in blue, green, black and red silk, with one magenta silk and metal-wrapped thread border and one red silk and metal-wrapped thread border. Shirt of the same jamdani fabric with gota cuffs, and collar of yellow cotton embellished with sequins and crimped metal strip. Three 'necklaces' of braided metal-wrapped silk thread stitched to chest. Hat of faded orange cotton embellished with sequins, crimped mtal strip, gota and metal-wrapped thread. Shaggy long hair of black cotton thread. Face embroidered with eyes, eyebrows, tilak mark and mustached. Additional shaggy mustache sitched on. Remains of adhesive on ears and hands indicating missing jewellery. Dark brown velvet sword (broken) in right hand with gota hilt and hanging metal-strip tassel with seed pearl. Fingers and toes tipped in red fabric.
