Acquired by Caspar Purdon Clarke on his purchasing trip to India in 1881 to 1882.

1883 South Kensington Museum Register entry: 'DRESS PIECE (Sari). Cotton. Red warp and blue weft, with narrow side borders in white, blue, and yellow. The principal end border is woven in bands with small diaper pattern in yellow silk and with narrow stripes in white and yellow silk; a short red fringe. Madura. 19th cent. L. 24 ft., W. 3 ft. 6 in. Bought, 8s. 1736.-1883. (I.S.).'
