Mat
20th century (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Mat of embroidered cotton. The field is of brick-red cotton surrounded by a separately attached dark blue border with red corners in each of which are four cowrie shells arranged in a cross. The mat is backed with coarse cotton, the two layers being attached by regular running-stitches all over making it quilted.
The red field is divided into four and the patterns have been created by running coloured cottons under the quilting stitches. Two quarters are done in a large lozenge design, and two in a similar pattern on a small scale. The four quarters of the field are divided by intersecting bands, in the centre of which is a blue embroidered knob surrounded by four cowrie shells. The blue border has red intersecting square and its outer edge has a yellow diamond pattern.
