Rumal
20th century (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Rumal of woven cotton, embroidered with mercerised cottons mainly in darning-stitch with small areas of buttonholing. The design consists of a roughly rectangular central motif probably representing a garden with diamond-shaped plots, stylised trees and flowering plants, and four pools represented by mirrors inset. Between this central area and the outer borders, stylised designs appear on each of the four sides of the cloth: one row of three pairs of peacocks, two rows of four man-and-camel pairs, and one row of four raths (?). A border of large and small triangular and lozenge motifs, in staggered rows, five deep, surrounds the cloth, and is itself surrounded by two outer borders, one a simple outline, and the other (the outermost) a double row of small triangles. The cloth is edged by a braid.
Colours: white and unbleached ground, embroidery in two reds, orange, magenta, two yellows, blue, green (possibly two greens) and tiny area of black.
