EUROPEAN-PRINTED COTTON

A British army officer purchased these samples in 1869 in Peshawar, in present-day Pakistan. Railways made it possible for European manufactured textiles to penetrate into India's remote regions. The fabrics appealed because of their fine quality, the designs imitating Indian patterns and the brightness of the new synthetic dyes.
