Bibliographic reference | John Clarke, Tibet: Caught in Time, plate 37, captioned: 'Remains of the iron bridge at Chaksam, 40 miles south of Lhasa and the site of a main ferry crossing point on the Yarlung River. The bridge was no longer in use, the river having cut into the piers on which it was anchored. It was one of the iron-chain bridges built by the saint Thangtong Gyalpo in the mid-fifteenth century. Stories of the life of Thangtong Gyalpo relate how an incident when he fired an arrow into the Kyichu River became an omen, inspiring him to build bridges for the good of all. The saint travelled to Kongpo in south-east Tibet where he found sponsors and iron sources for his constructions. |
