Costume design for Phyllis Dare as Lady Mereston in Act II of "Lady Frederick". The design shows a full length female figure holding a purple parasol in her right hand, and with her left arm extended. The figure wears a late 19th century yellow and purple "princess line" walking dress with bustle over a high collared white blouse. The front of the dress is decorated with purple vertical lines trimmed with purple tassels. The cuffs of the jacket are also trimmed with purple tassels. The figure also wears a pair of purple gloves and a purple hat with veil decorated with yellow plumes. To the right hand side of the figure is a drawing of the hat, and to the left is a sketch showing the back of the dress.

Object history | This Costume design by Anthony Holland is part of an extensive collection of designs donated to the Theatre Museum by the artist in 1996. The design was executed for a production of W. Somerset Maugham's play "Lady Frederick" at the Savoy Theatre, November 22nd 1946. The play was produced by Murray MacDonald. |
