ISBN 112900534. p.83, cat. no. 35, pl. 37 35 Plate 37 Palampore: painted and dyed cotton. Made for the European market. Coromandel Coast (northern region). 18th century, third quarter. Victoria and Albert Museum, acc. no. 68-1880 (neg. no. 37073). 10ft 8 1/2in (326.5cm) x 7ft 8in (233.8 cm). Colours: 2 reds?, 2 violets? (both these colours appear yellowish, due to exposure and perhaps faulty mordanting), blue, yellow (faded) and black. Outlines black and red? Overpainting for green. A slender serpentine tree growing on a low rocky mound broken by patterning. The creeper-entwined branches have flowers resembling roses, chrysanthemums and peonies. Scroll markings on the trunk and some branches. There is a United East India Company stamp on the lower right corner on the back of the cloth, a small square stamp inscribed C (G?) 2 in the lower left. There are five pairs of brocaded lines of red cotton near the top right corner. The tree is a variant of the Garrick curtains and palampore, plates 32 to 36. It is reversed and branches are modified. There is also a greater profusion of foliage. the mound is similar to those in the Garrick chintzes but the treatment is more decorative. Another variant of this tree, with a debased scale mound, occurs on two curtains in the chintz bedroom of the Chateau Borèly, Marseilles. One is hung behind the bed and the other serves as a curtain to the present alcove arrangement. Bibliography: G.P. Baker, Calico Painting and Printing in the East Indies, plate 6. M Percival, The Chintz Book, plate III.
