Brief description | 'Gwalior Gateway' des. by Major J B Keith for the Calcutta International Exhibition of 1883-84, and executed by craftsmen in Gwalior, carved sandstone, Gwalior, late 19th century |
Object history | Originally exhibited at the International Exhibition, Calcutta, in 1883-4. It was dismantled and transported to England for the Colonial and Indian Exhibition, London, in 1886. Afterwards it was erected in Gallery 48A, formerly an Indian gallery, at which point the canopy, being too high for the gallery in South Kensington Museum, was placed in storage. 48A is no longer an Asian gallery, so the archway is now completely hidden behind a modern fascia. |
