Costume design for Stanley Baxter as an Ugly Sister in "Cinderella". The design depicts a full length male figure. The figure wears an elaborate pantomime costume in the style of a "punk". The costume consists of a black sleeveless leather jacket decorated with studs and chains worn over a T Shirt with a punk face depicted on it. The figure also wears a pair of particoloured plain black and red tartan baggy trousers which are decorated with a spiked calthrop, chains and safety pins. The arms are decorated with chains and studded wrist bands, the hands are decorated with spiked rings, a dog collar is worn around the neck, and the ears and nose with safety pins. The outfit is completed with a pair of green stiletto shoes, and a spiked hair style in yellow, green and pink. The hair is also decorated with an upstanding knife and sword. In the lower right hand corner is a ink drawing showing the back view of the jacket.

Object history | This costume design by Anthony Holland is part of an extensive collection of designs donated to the Theatre Museum by the artist in 1996. The design was executed for a production of the pantomime "Cinderella" at the King's Theatre, Edinburgh, December 7th, 1979. The production was directed by Bruce McClure, and the settings and costumes were designed by Berkeley Sutcliffe. Anthony Holland designed the costumes for the Ugly Sisters. Historical significance: An example of late 20th century costume design for a pantomime dame by an artist who worked extensively in this specialised area. |
