Costume design for Angus Lennie as an Ugly Sister in the finale of "Cinderella". The design depicts a full length male figure wearing a parody of an 18th century panniered dress. The costume consists of a silver bodice decorated down the front with five orange bows, and the sleeves end in orange ruffles. The dress consists of a pair of orange panniers edged with several rows of ruffles, which open to reveal a pair of knee length orange and silver bloomers. The outfit is completed with a pair of high heeled silver shoes, and a large curly white wig which extends on either side of the head and is surmounted by a hat which consists of an orange frill and decorated with four artificial white mice.

Object history | This costume design by Anthony Holland is part of an extensive collection of designs donated to the Theatre Museum by the artist in 1996. The design was executed for a production of the pantomime "Cinderella" at the King's Theatre, Edinburgh, December 7th, 1979. The production was directed by Bruce McClure, and the settings and costumes were designed by Berkeley Sutcliffe. Anthony Holland designed the costumes for the Ugly Sisters. Historical significance: An example of late 20th century costume design for a pantomime dame by an artist who worked extensively in this specialised area. |
