Qipao (in Mandarin, Cantonese: cheung sam) with inset sleeves and additional material to make them long. The dress has a high stiffened neck and fastens at the neck, down under the right arm and along the right side with ten black satin loops and knots. The fastenings are formed into a leaf shape on each side.
There are also two press-studs along the collar bone closure.
The neck, right closure, hem and cuffs are edged with narrow bias-cut black satin. There is a black satin hook for hanging it up sewn into the back of the neck.
There are slits up the side to a height of 28cm.
The material of the qipao is a lavender grey silk which has a slight self-patterned zig-zag design, and on top of this are brown and white satin leaf sprays. The dress is lined throughout with lavender crêpe silk.

The garment originally belonged to the donor's mother-in-law, Mrs. Wong.
Historical context
It was fashionable at this time to wear qipao quite loose and down to the ankle. It was also worn in pregnancy so the wearer was actually smaller than the size of the garment suggests. It was 'everyday' wear.
