Object history | Purchased from Arthur Morrison, accessioned in 1911. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Asia Department registers, as part of a 2022 provenance research project. This kakemono contains the famous composition illustrating the Maha Projana Paramita Sutra, and is especially useful as a standard records of the strictly orthodox attitudes and attributes in the Buddhist Pantheon from the Buddha Fujen and Moniu (in gold) downward, the whole composition is fully explained in a paper by Mr James Roup in the Transaction of the Japan Society (vol. VIII, pt. II, p.215, 191), though the kakemono he uses as illustration is less complete than this once. It is the work of an anonymous priestly painter of the early 18th century - Arthur Morrison (taken from label on back of object) |
