Drum body in dumb-bell form, made from a single piece of wood with the walls left relatively thick and with chisel marks visible on the interior of the cups, wood covered in black lacquer with flower-rafts and maple leaves on swirling water across the outer surface in gold hiramaki-e (metal powder sprinkled on to a lacquer design before it has hardened so that it is in low relief), enashiji (nashiji used in the pictorial elements rather than as a background) and fundame lacquer (matt, densely-sprinkled fine gold dust).
