Folio

Lithograph
1985-1986 (printed and published)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Folio is a set of prints inspired by organic materials and microscopic views of plant forms, cells and seeds. This print, which includes the artist's thumb print, is a fine example of the extent to which lithography can convey the sense of an artist's direct and passionate involvement with the printing surface. Lithography involves first wetting the printing surface and then drawing on it using a greasy medium. A greasy ink is then rolled over the surface, and because water repels it, the ink adheres only to the drawn marks. The image is then printed. An offset print is an impression made on the paper by an image or design that was printed directly from the worked printing surface. As a result, the offset image is printed the same way around as it was drawn originally, rather than as a mirror image.
