Japan, modern crafts, studio, basketry; Sekijima Hisako

Japan, modern crafts, studio, basketry
Physical description
It consists of layer upon layer of extremely thin cypress shavings wound around a roughly plaited internal form made from split lengths of cypress root. These were left long enough so that they could be pulled around and secured on the outside, thus binding the walls into a solid whole. The nature of the materials used means that, although the basket has only a small interior volume and very thick walls, it weighs surprisingly little when picked up.
