Scroll Painting (Thangka) with Four Mandalas
1400–1500
Each of these four mandalas, or ritual diagrams, represents
a sacred space. Taken singly, each may also be understood
as the ground plan of the three-dimensional metal ‘palace’
seen in the case to the right. The two monks in the centre
are dressed in the robes and hats of the Sakya order of
Buddhism.
