Battle axe and sheath kalyo kangyu type, steel on a wooden haft. The axe-head has a bevelled curved cutting edge, incurved at the top, with straight back sloped slightly forward. The back is continued to form a long hollow cylinder, into which a pine rod is inserted to form the complete handle. The front and handle are incised with vertical lines, zig-zag ornament, and herring-bone pattern.
The rectangular flat sheath expands outward towards the top and the upper half is open in front, crossed by the horizontal bands of containing slips. It is incised with pattern.
There is a long worn cotton thong, for suspension.

Object history | Made by one of the Kachin Hill Tribes, of the Kindat District, Chindwin, Upper Burma. As originally arranged and displayed in Exhibition Road Indian Museum galleries until 1955, with some additions while in storage, case F.690 Given by Mrs H. S. Wallace, 10 Lawrence House, Lawrence Street, Cheyne Walk, S.W.3. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Museum records (Asia Department registers and/or Central Inventory) as part of a 2023 provenance research project. R.P. 1919-2875 |
