Krishna

Place of origin |
This small image of Krishna playing a (missing) flute is readily identified as being from Gujarat because of its side supports. The headdress, the treatment of the dhoti, plain square base, brassy colour and missing inlay ( in this case including elbows and a hand as well as eyes) are also quite typical. What is unusual for this style is that Krishna has four arms. Indeed, the arms are in a pose hardly known on any Venugopala image. Instead of holding a chakra and conch the hands are empty, with the upper right raised to his head and the upper left slightly above the lower left. Could this be a dance pose? Moderate wear.
