Sculptural Hand

Place of origin

Fragment of a carved hand and wrist, probably of a bodhisattva. It is a right hand, with the palm held outwards in an abhaya mudra. The interstices between the digits are all webbed. The top of the thumb is missing as are the tops of the two smaller fingers. There are two bracelets with heavy links at the wrist.

Acquired from Evert Barger, Lecturer in Medieval History at the University of Bristol and Philip Wright, V&A Museum, as part of the collection of finds excavated during their expedition to the Swat valley in 1938. This is no. 89 in Barger's lists.
