Stand for a jar, hollow and reversible, with mouth and base expanding to a rim, from a contracted waist. Round the waist are three sets of black lines. Slightly chipped and weathered. Made of baked buff-coloured earthenware, covered with a polished terra-cotta coloured pigment (haematite), and painted with three sets of blacklines.

Object history
A label is pasted on it, presumably written by Robert Sewell, before 1914, which reads, "Prehistoric India. Stand for a vessel found in excavating a rude stone circle at Juntakal, Bellary District, India. It is similar to such stands found in ancient Egypt."

Purchased from Robert Sewell, Esq. (late ICS), 4 Bristol Gardens, Roehampton, Surrey. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Museum records (Asia Department registers and/or Central Inventory) as part of a 2023 provenance research project.
