Object history | Amulet made for pilgrims visiting the sacred site of Pushkar, Ajmer, Rajasthan. The Monkey god, Hanuman, is shown here in the episode from the Ramayana where he is bidden to fly from Lanka to the Himalayan mountain near to Mount Kailasha to find medicinal herbs to heal the stricken heroes, Rama and his brother Lakshmana and the monkey army, all of whom had been vanquished by the demon, Ravana. In his haste Hanuman grabs at the mountain and uproots its summit covered in herbs and flies back with it to the battlefield, whereupon the two heroes and their monkey soldiers inhale the medicinal herbs and are immediately healed. |
