Object history
The figure represents Nandi, the bull vehicle or vahana of the Hindu god Shiva. Such recumbent figures of Nandi are place before the temples of Shiva in a small open-sided temple of their own. The style of decoration of this sculpture has been identified with that of the Hoysala kingdom (c.1110-1327) of the area around Mysore in Karnataka, south-west India. The donor, a Mr McLaughlin, noted that the figure came from a temple at Mysore submerged during the construction of the local waterworks in 1882.
