Object history
Bought from R. Gordon-Smith Esq for £100 in 1909 (on loan to the museum from 1905). Accession register has the note: 'The Vendor states that the painting was obtained by an officer of the 23rd Royal Welsh at Lucknow, during the relief of that city in 1857'. Inscribed on the back of IM.2:1-1909: 'Surgeon P. J. Clarke, 90th Rgt./17 [?]/7/58' Another note on the accession register in different ink says "Said to have been been found by an uncle of Gordon-Smith at the relief of Lucknow in 1857." According to Miss V[ictoria] Manthorpe of Central Television, Birmingham. (Letter, 23.10.1982)."

Purchased from R. Gordon-Smith Esq (c/o H.B.M. Consulate General, Kobe, Japan). This acquisition information reflects that found in the Museum records (Asia Department registers and/or Central Inventory) as part of a 2023 provenance research project.
