Design drawing for the 'Restaurant Shells', Sydney Opera House, Australia

Architectural Drawing
1965 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Ove Arup & Partners developed this design for the shell roofs of the Sydney Opera House in collaboration with the Danish architect Joon Utzon who won the international competition for the project. As consultant engineers Ove Arup & Partners were able to execute the architect's design by using parts of a sphere for the basic shape, and by constructing the roofs from pre-cast concrete clad with tiles. The drawing shows three views of one of the shells: two elevations - one of the bare structure and the other clad - and a plan. (This part of the complex is not now used as a restaurant).
