Place of origin

The tray black lacquer, oblong, carved with rockwork and birds, flowers and foliage, the stand carved wood.
The reverse with 'Xuande' mark, and displayed 1960-1990 as Chinese, 17th century.
Opinion of James Watt, Metropolitan Museum 6.8.1990:certainly a very early piece, Song or early Yuan. The relacquering of the reverse and the mark very late.
