Wine Vessel


Wine vessel with cover of cast bronze, ornamented with archaic fret and scroll patterns and dragons' heads. Inscribed characters Tzu Sun, "Sons and grandsons". The carved wood stand is incised with a cylindrical character ping, showing that the piece was formerly in the Imperial Collection at Beijing.
Oval swelling body with bands of ornament in low relief and loop handles ending in dragons' heads; the cover is surmounted by a knob. The stand is oval, with lobed and moulded edge, resting on six feet.

Purchased from Dr. S. W. Bushell (Temple Club, Arundel Street, Strand), accessioned in 1899. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Asia Department registers, as part of a 2022 provenance research project.
