JAR AND LID Jar of porcelain with clear glaze and decoration in overglaze red and green enamels; mark Eiraku impressed on base Lid of porcelain with clear glaze and decoration in overglaze red and gilt in Kinrande style Kyoto, Eiraku workshop JAPANESE; c.1827-1850 280 & a-1877 This jar and lid were not made as one object, the lid having been added to convert the jar into an incense burner. The two parts are both Chinese inspired, the precise Kinrande style of the lid contrasting with the free Swatow style of the jar.(As at 2005)
Object history
Purchased from the Japanese Commissioners for the Philadelphia Exposition of 1876, accessioned in 1877. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Asia Department registers, as part of a 2022 provenance research project.
