1368-1398 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Tile end, round, made of buff coloured earthenware with green lead glaze. A raised band round the edge and within this a phoenix and clouds in raised relief. Detail well observed. Note on back of tile: "Unearthed in my presence at the Ming Palace near Nanking in 1908. W. Perceval Yetts." This end tile with phoenix design (standing for the empress) was picked up at the site of the palace built by the first Ming dynasty emperor at Nanjing, between 1381 and 1383. A special kiln was set up outside one of Nanjing's city gates, to make tiles for the palace. The site has recently been excavated, and many tile remnants discovered.
