Painting, in opaque watercolour on paper, an equestrian portrait of Raj Singh of Sitamau. He is surrounded by numerous attendants and courtiers. The Raja is dressed in mainly white costume and white turban with gold edgings, and is seated on a white charger. According to one of the many short inscriptions on the red borders, he is 59 years old. The foreground is in variegated shades of green, with small flowers and pink rocky outcrops, the background predominantly plain green with a distant line of hills, a townscape by a river to the left, and a multicoloured landscape above.

Object history
Bought from the dealer Mark Zebrowski who brought it into the UK on a flight from Munich on 12 February 1978 (RF MA/1/Z28: letter to Robert Skelton dated 25 April 1978). Other works by Far Chand include an 1823 equestrian portrait in the collection of Mrs Rochlin (in 1978).
