Baz Bahadur was the Muslim ruler of Malwa in central India from about 1555 to 1561. The love between him and the beautiful Hindu poet and musician Rupmati is a popular theme in paintings of the period. They are usually depicted riding side by side in a moonlit landscape. The Persian inscription on the border reads ‘Baz Bahadur and Rupmati, the work of Faqirullah’.
