Small paintings of court ladies were popular in Bikaner. They were often presented as nazar or gifts to the ruler on auspicious days such as his birthday or religious festivals.
Many of the artists at the Hindu court of Bikaner were Muslims. They perfected a style that combined Mughal delicacy and naturalism with local Rajput subject matter. The vertical marking on this lady’s forehead shows her to be a devotee of the Hindu god Vishnu.
