The painting comes from a ragamala or ‘garland of ragas’, a series of pictorial depictions of the various musical modes. The major ragas have ‘wives’ and ‘sons’. An inscription in Takri, a script used in the Punjab Hills, identifies the mode illustrated here as Kanara raga, the ‘son’ of Megha raga. The illustration depicts a musician holding a vina saluting a seated prince who is playing a vina.
