Section from a scroll painting, painted in watercolour on paper, mounted on cotton, illustrating a version of the Ramayana, the section is in two registers. The upper register shows Vishnu Anantasayana with his consorts on the left, and a female attendant on the right. The lower register show the episode of Lakshman and Surpanakha on the left, and Rama seated with Sita on the right.

The upper register shows Vishnu Anantasayana with his consorts on the left, and a female attendant on the right. The lower register show the episode of Lakshman and Surpanakha on the left, and Rama seated with Sita on the right.
Production
Mr. P. S. Rawson considers that these paintings may be from Tirupati, just north of Madras, but it is possible that the paintings may be from as far North as Ganjam under post-Vijayanagar influence. It seems certain that somewhere along the Coromandel coast is the place of origin.
