This is a cast of the original marble step from Francesco di Simone Ferrucci's great monument to the lawyer and writer Alessandro Tartagni (1424-1477) in Bologna. The original marble relief from which this cast is taken is under the elaborate sarcophagus commemorating Tartagni. Ferrucci also worked on the sculptures for the Cathedral of San Petronio in Bologna; the cast of the great portal from San Petronio by Jacopo della Quercia is also in the V&A's collection.
