Design for the King in Jack and the Beanstalk, showing a full length male figure wearing a knee length military coat in dark red, the fronts with wide bands of gold frogging, the wide cuffs edged with fur, the coat fastened with a brown belt with a gold buckle with a gold cord 'sash' from the left shoulder, with, beneath, a brown, high necked, knee length tunic decorated with similar frogging, and over the left shoulder a floor length fur cloak with a high stand up collar attached to the shoulder with gold cords and tassels, and brown calf length boots, the tops edged in gold and trimmed with a gold tassel to the front. The background is painted in green-brown gouache. The design is inscribed on the reverse with the name of the actor, the role and the pantomime.

Object history | This is one of a collection of designs for pantomime and cabaret, given to the Theatre Museum by the designer, Cynthia Tingey, who created the costumes for 15 of the annual London Palladium pantomimes. This design was made for the pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk, at the London Palladium, 17 December 1968. The production was directed by Albert J. Knight. Ivor Emmanuel played the King. Historical significance: An example of pantomime costume design of the second half of the 20th century and of the work of a designer who specialised in pantomime and variety design. |
