Gallery label | The image of the dead Christ was a symbol of the Eucharist, or Holy Communion. It often featured on the door of the tabernacle, where the sanctified bread was kept in a church. This is a cast of what was almost certainly the tabernacle door in the basilica in Padua. The emaciated figure of Christ is framed by elegant Renaissance arches.(2014) |
Object history | Purchased from Signor Tombola in 1884 for £1 7s 6d |
Historical context | This relief is almost certainly the tabernacle door for the High Altar which was ordered from Venice in 1493, and for which the last payment is recorded in 1494. |
