14 rectangular samples of silk crêpe placed in two horizontal rows, enclosed in a blue woodblock-printed paper border. The samples are all the same size (4.5cms x 2cms) but each one is a different colour. Red ink arabic numerals have been added inside small circles left blank for the purpose as part of the border. There are ten blank spaces and ten blank circles at the left of the sheet where more samples and numerals could have been affixed. To the right of the sheet is a different vertical decorative border eclosing a red capital 'A' and 'No 53' also in red. Below these, as part of the woodblock is written 'Hinchong Silks'. In the top right hand corner, handwritten in black ink, is '4/4 Dam fig & Crape Shawls G H'
The whole sheet is mounted onto card and this has been secured inside a frame mount of matching cream card, both card mounts are modern.

Historical context | Another similar sheet, although not necessarily a pair with FE.42-1983, was also on offer at the Martyn Gregory Gallery. This other sheet was not so well printed i.e. the block was not so well inked. It had two more samples of crêpe attached and the colours were very similar and bright. At the top of this second sheet was written 'Sup 7 or 1 (this illegible) Sat fig & Crape Shawls G H'. In place of the 'A' and 'No 53' there was a 'P' and 'No 43'. Under this was an extra stamped red 'A'. This second sheet is illustrated in Martyn Gregory Gallery Catalogue No. 34, China Trade Pictures, Summer 1983, no.22, page 21. |
