Painting, in opaque watercolour and gold on paper, portrait of the Mughal emperor Farrukhsiyar, ruler of Delhi (1712-1719). The Emperor is seated on a low golden throne sheltered by a gold canopy with rolled-up blinds of flowered brocade. He faces right, is heavily bearded and wears a turban and outer robe of green and red brocade; chains of pearls and other stones encircle the neck and the turban. He holds a rose in one hand and in the other a black fly-whisk. The background is green; in the sky above are two winged figures bearing offering bowls in their hands.
