Buddhist Votive Tablet

11th century - 12th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This moulded plaque is unusual in its depiction of the Buddha in a seated posture with pendant legs, his hands raised in the gesture of teaching the Buddhist law (dharmacakra mudra). This posture and gesture are both unusual in Pagan period representations of the Buddha, and indicate the lingering influence of older Mon traditions of lower Burma, where such representations were favoured. Around Him are many small votive styupas. At the bottom, in Devanagari characters, is the "Ye dharma", & etc or Buddhist Creed.
