Bottle

Mid-18th century (made)
Place of origin

This bottle was made in India, perhaps Western India or the Deccan, in the mid-18th century. The form is based on 'case' bottles of the Netherlands, and the cap is made from a 6 stuivers coin of the Netherlands (Provinces of Holland and W. Friesland), c. 1671-4). The cap bears a Netherlands control stamp of a kind introduced in 1814, but could have been added at any time between then and 1867 when the bottle was acquired by the Museum. The V&A has other glass bottles with similar caps, all from the collection of Joseph Marryat, a noted connoisseur of ceramics and glass from all periods and geographical areas. A related bottle was in the British Museum collections by 1753.
