The decoration designed and executed by John Hutton, made by James Powell & Son, Whitefriars Glassworks. John Hutton took up wheel engraving developing a flexible drive mechanism based on a dentist's drill. This vase is thought to have been made as part of a charitable scheme at around the time of John Hutton's major commission for the glass screen at the West Front of Coventry Cathedral. Object history | This vase is part of a limited series engraved by John Hutton, each with a unique arrangement of the angel figures he had designed and engraved for the Great West Screen of the new Coventry Cathedral. They were available from the cathedral shop, priced at 100 guineas and it was hoped that the sale of these vases would help with the cathedral's financial deficit on its completion. |
