Boy's Eton suit, consisting of jacket, waistcoat and trousers.
1. single-breasted cropped jacket of black wool, lined with partly quilted black twill (the sleeves lined with black and white striped satinised cotton). The jacket has a turn-down collar with notched lapels, inset sleeves with two-button cuffs, and a back hem cut to a shallow point at the waist; the garment fastens at the front with three stitched buttonholes and black buttons.
2. matching waistcoat lined with black and white striped satinised cotton. The waistcoat has two inset pockets at the front; the back, which has an adjustable strap and metal buckle at the waist, is made of black twill. The garment fastens at the front with four stitched buttonholes and black buttons.
3. slightly tapering trousers of black wool hair-striped in white, with a waist lining of black and white striped satinised cotton, and pocket linings of grey twill. The garment has a button-through fly fastening at the waist front, and an inset pocket at each side; the waist fastens with a stitched buttonhole and grey button, and there are additional buttons around the waist for braces.

Object history | Worn by the donor, Cyril Sidney Herschman (born 12/05/1926 at the Catholic Commercial Rd Hospital in Limehouse East); as a child he lived in Victoria Park Rd, near BGMC, and went to Lorreston Road Infants' School. His father, Alf Herschman, ordered the suit from Gardiners for him, as well as a naval rating's and captain's uniforms, all worn for best. |
