London County Council school prize certificate, of portrait proportions, printed in black, brown and terra cotta on ivory paper. The certificate has a border printed with laurel leaves and the signs of the zodiac, with the corners showing a sun, the stars, a shooting star and the moon respectively; the words 'To London' and 'Children' are inserted at the top, and 'in Time' and 'of War' along the bottom. Within the border are the words 'LONDON COUNTY COUNCIL', with a space for the name of the winner's school (Queens Head Street ); the wording continues ' THE AWARD OF PRIZES having been suspended by the Council during the Great War this certificate is given for good conduct and meritorious work during the educational year 1916-17', with an inscription 'To Catherine Hawes'. The certificate is signed by Amy A Wing, Catherine's headmistress, with the facsimile signatures of the Chairmen of the Council and the Education Committee.

Object history | Awarded to Catherine Lillian Mary Hawes (born 18/04/1911) of Devonshire Street (now Devonia Road), Islington, who attended Queens Head Street School from 1916 until 1925 (she left at 14 years old). The certificates are the wartime equivalent of medals for full attendance by pupils (first introduced by the School Board for London in 1887). |
