School Photograph
1915-1925 (made)
School photograph of landscape proportions, in sepia tint, showing a group of thirty-four boys sitting and standing in rows among the desks of a classroom with wood and glass partition walls. The boys' clothes show the transition to the fashions of the post-WW1 period from those of the Victorian and Edwardian eras: the majority wear jumpers with
collars (some with ties), but one or two wear jackets (including one Norfolk jacket) and two boys wear Eton collars; one boy standing at the back, with his head bandaged, wears an army combat jacket. A London County Council Copy book (No A17) is visible on the master's desk in the foreground, with a chalk-box, an inkstand, and a bundle of pupils' copy books tied with string.

Object history | References: Found among papers of donor's late brother-in-law: he was born c. 1916 and lived as a child "on a Council Estate of small houses off Roehampton Lane, Putney"; she thinks the photos of boys were his, but cannot recognise him on either. |
