Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This cross is an example of the kind of filigree, called canetille, which was immensely fashionable throughout Europe at the beginning of the 19th century. The delicate filigree, usually made of gold and set with pale foiled stones such as amethysts, crystal and peridots, was used for jewellery of all kinds, often in matching sets. The main characteristic of canetille was the use of tiny bee-hives of coiled wire, which can be seen on this cross surrounding the pink foiled stones.
